Fundamentals of Research Methodology

Programme Overview

This programme will enable participants to identify and apply appropriate research methodologies in order to plan, conduct and evaluate basic research in an organization. The course, will furthermore, enable participants to distinguish between the scientific method and common sense knowledge, while laying the foundation for research skills at higher levels.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate an understanding of and applying of basic research concepts
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the ethical dimensions of conducting applied research
  • Identifying various sources of information
  • Planning and conducting basic qualitative and quantitative research
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and applying basic descriptive statistics and qualitative analysis
  • Demonstrate an understanding of writing a basic research report of limited extent
  • Respond proactively to critical factors in the process of policy development and management
  • Align departmental policies with national and provincial policies
  • Be familiar with key policy success and failure factors
  • Structure and develop a policy document
